An amusing list . . .

Posted on Updated on

“Worrying is interest on troubles not yet due” Oscar Wilde.

With the twins due in 3 weeks now I thought I would revisit a list I made this time last year. During a particular bout of anxiety before L was born this time last year I wrote on a scrap piece of paper an extensive list of all that was worrying me about the impending arrival. Not so much a “to do” list but a “scared of” list. It’s an amusing list to look back on as most if not all of the things keeping me awake back then were filed in the “sorted” or “What was I thinking” tray within the first few days!

This is a list I suspect only an expectant dad could possibly write!

  1. What temperature should a bath be? – Warm!
  2. Will I gag when changing a nappy? – Only sometimes!
  3. How often do they feed? – A lot at first then less later on! Simples!
  4. How will I know when she is hungry? – No doubt on that one!
  5. What happens when we get home? – A lot!
  6. Will the Moses basket be to small? – They have been used for centuries for a reason!
  7. What do I do when they wont sleep? – Be awake as well! It’s not rocket science!
  8. How much should she/he eat/drink? – Still no idea! Until she has had enough?
  9. When does teething start? – When it starts. Chill!
  10. More importantly what exactly is teething? – Clue is in the word!

Looking back I obviously had no idea what was really going to be frightening! This time round none of the above even register on the “scared of list”. In fact this time round its a very short list indeed.

  1. Surely there aren’t enough hours in the day?

Between the 16 feeds and 24 nappy changes needed for L and the twins every day when exactly is there going to be time for anything else. Of course I’m going to have the sanctuary of work during the week but Mrs B with the help of the support team (More later) is going to have to apply her already ruthless skills of organisation and efficiency into policing a totalitarian regime at No.23.

Once Mrs B has sorted this out she should probably be called in to sort out the worlds financial system. Simple in comparison!!

Excellent post! I had 2 babies 13 months apart and find there aren’t enough hours in the day, good luck! I’m sure you’ll be great, you soon get in the swing of it.

I love that you wrote a list…never mind that you still have it! Funny isn’t it that before your first you are terrified of what turn out to be such non-events as soon as the baby actually arrives.
Good luck for the new two!

Thank you for taking the time to have a read. Really looking forward to the two little ones now but obviously with a certain amount of trepidation! Its going to be a fun house!

It’s hard work having little ones so close together isn’t it ? I had 6 under 6 at one point and those years have vanished from my memory as if by magic !
A friend of mine, also a dad, came up with a great idea – a 4 scoop scoop for making bottles up – now that’s one good idea!

Thanks. Good idea. I was going to put a little mark on the bottle lids to show where 4 scoops came up to so I could use them as a big spoon! 6 under 6 deserves some sort of medal surely!

Really enjoyed this post. Twins – wow. I only have the one so far and have often wondered how on earth I would have coped with twins. But not just twins you also have a toddler to take care of aswell. It will all be fine!
